DECEMBER DINNER MEETING:
Advances in the Design of Laminated Glass

The December Dinner Meeting is generously supported by DuPont.

This presentation is designed to educate designers and structural engineers on methods and software tools that can be used to perform structural analyses of laminated glass subjected to different loading and support conditions.  The course will focus on the performance differences between interlayer types, as well as differences in durability and impact resistance that have advanced the use of laminated glass in a variety of architectural applications.  These include minimally-supported facades, glass railings and walkways, and canopies and skylights.  In addition, the growing use of laminated glass in natural (hurricane, tornado) and man-made security threats (bombs, bullets) will be covered.

A standards update will include the Effective Thickness Calculation method, now a part of ASTM E1300, Standard Practice for Determining Load Resistance of Glass in Buildings, the new ASTM standard practice on the Design of Supported Glass Walkways, and ASTM F1642 Test Method for Glazing and Glazing Systems subject to Airblast Loadings.   The Wingard blast software will be used to demonstrate an analysis of a laminated glass system designed for blast protection.

Dr. Bennison received a B.Sc. (Hons) from the University of Leeds and a MS in Metallurgy and Materials Engineering and a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from Lehigh University.  Upon graduation, he took a position as a Guest Scientist at the National Institute of Science and Technology, NIST, where he worked on microstructure/mechanical property relationships in brittle materials.  In 1992, he joined DuPont as a Senior Research Scientist in Central Research and Development.  In this assignment, he lead many research and technical efforts into physical behavior of materials, adhesion, and interface phenomena, corrosion of materials, and computational materials modeling.  In 2001, he transferred to DuPont’s Glass Laminating Solutions business as a Research Associate and works on programs related to the development of polymer interlayers for laminated glass.  He currently heads DuPont’s Global Consulting team for laminated glass and is a Senior Technology Associate.

SEAOI EVENTS
SEAOI is now an AIA/CES approved provider of continuing education for architects.
Dinner Meetings
Dinner meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at the Cliff Dwellers Club in Chicago. The event includes a cocktail hour, dinner, and presentation. Presentations are typically member firms' projects related to structural engineering. Two months out of the year, our dinner meetings are replaced with the Structural Engineers Foundation Lecture. Dinner meetings are not held during the summer months of June, July, and August. See above for information on the next dinner meeting.
Seminars/Workshops
SEAOI hosts many seminars and workshops throughout the year to aid in meeting your continuing education requirements. These events typically vary from 4 to 8 hours and are held throughout the Chicagoland area. To see what is coming up next, please view Upcoming Events on the homepage here. We are now offering remote services to those of you who cannot make it into Chicagoland for our half-day seminars. Via your own phone and computer, you can "attend" the seminars and receive your CE credits. Contact us if you are interested.
Bridge Symposium
The Bridge Symposium is held annually during the month of April. Short lectures are provided throughout the day in between a provided breakfast and lunch.

Annual Awards Banquet
Every year, SEAOI holds a competition of Excellence in Structural Engineering that can be entered by any member firm. Categories are based on project cost and include Small, Medium and Large projects. The projects are presented in May to the membership in front of judges who will choose the winners. An awards banquet is held in June where the competition winners are announced. For more information, go to the Excellence in Structural Engineering Competition page here.

Annual Trade Show
The Annual Trade Show is held in January and everyone is welcome to and attend. Vendors and companies have booths set up for attendees to obtain information and short presentations are given by a handful of the vendors. The event is held in the morning from 8am to noon.
Refresher Course
The refresher course is given each year during the winter months to prepare candidates for the IL SE Exam. You may register for any number of the content areas provided or, at a reduced price, you can register for every course. If you are licensed, the refresher course can be counted towards your continuing education credit requirements.

Young Engineers Committee Events
SEAOI's Young Engineers Committee hosts numerous events throughout the year that are geared towards younger and non-licensed engineers such as happy hours and SE Exam socials. In addition, the committee holds social events that are open to members and their friends and families such as baseball games.

SPONSORED/PROMOTED EVENTS
Canstruction
Canstruction® combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed hungry people. Competing teams, lead by architects and engineers, showcase their talents by designing giant sculptures made entirely out of canned foods. At the close of the exhibitions all of the food used in the structures is donated to local food banks for distribution to pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, elderly and day care centers.
IIT-Rice Campus EWEEK Exhibit
This is a free event to introduce children of all ages to the field of engineering. The building will be full of hands-on activities and demonstrations to allow young people to experience and explore the engineering field. The theme of this years Expo is "Engineered in Illinois", with an emphasis on sustainability. SEAOI is a sponsor of this event and will have (4) display table. Additional information on the event may be found at; http://danada.rice.iit.edu/eweek. If you're interested in participating at the SEAOI display tables, please contact Carol Drucker at carol@dzse.com.
