Load Rating of Highway Bridges

This presentation will provide bridge engineers with the fundamental knowledge about load rating of highway bridges. The three methods of performing load ratings described in the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation, namely Allowable Stress Rating, Load Factor Rating and Load and Resistance Factor Rating will be discussed along with illustrative examples of various structure types. The presentation will discuss various approaches to enhance the qualitative understanding of load rating results to ensure that the results are within an appropriately reasonable order of magnitude. The effect of material deterioration on load rating capacity and the consideration of potential alternate load paths will be examined. A description of the load posting process based on the results of the load rating will also be presented.
About the Presenter
Farhad Panthaki is a licensed Professional Engineer and Assistant Vice President / Senior Project Manager at TranSystems in Boston, MA. He received a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Bombay, India and a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Mr. Panthaki has over 24 years of bridge engineering experience with a particular focus on bridge load rating. He has performed or managed the load rating of hundreds of fixed and movable bridges ranging from simple spans to complex structures including continuous trusses and suspension bridges. He is experienced in the evaluation of steel, concrete, timber, iron and masonry members; as well as the selection of appropriate software packages based on bridge structure type. His experience also includes bridge inspection, bridge rehabilitation design, and construction phase services.
