Description

Speaker: Toby Mitchell and James Pawlikowski Recorded: January 10, 2023 The New Campus Instructional Facility at the University of Illinois College of Engineering The Campus Instructional Facility (CIF) is a new center for flexible learning designed to meet the changing needs of students and faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). Located at the northwest corner of the Bardeen Quadrangle, this teaching hub enables collaboration and incorporates new technologies for hands-on learning. CIF has proved to be highly popular as a learning and teaching facility with a mix of both traditional and innovative classrooms and has been included in an advanced engineering course. The design of the building focuses on the structure becoming part of the architecture. All structure is exposed, and done so in a meaningful way – part of the design concept is to use the building as a teaching tool. Structural elements have been designed to illustrate load flow, and to be informative as to how they perform, while at the same time enhancing the space. The building has a great attention to coordination and detail to establish this aesthetic, utilizing AESS steel throughout, fire engineering to eliminate fireproofing, polished concrete, and structural brick to create a new façade system. AIA Illinois awarded the Campus Instructional Facility with the Capitol Award, its highest honor. 1 CE credit will be issued for this webinar.
