The SEAOI Equity Diversity Inclusion (EDI) Committee has compiled a valuable resource: a list of Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) that offer Civil or Architectural Engineering programs. The purpose is to assist structural engineering firms in recruiting diverse candidates for internships and entry-level opportunities, discover top talent, and drive innovation and inclusivity within your teams.

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) List Offering Civil or Architectural Engineering Programs

This is a live database that will continue to be updated and fact-checked periodically, and a PDF copy is also available for download. For each college/university sorted by region, we included a link to their website, primary and secondary contact information, courses offered, and information on career fairs.

We encourage you to use this list to directly reach out to contacts when recruiting for your firm, exploring career fair opportunities, and seeking scholarship applicants. This initiative aligns with SEAOI’s commitment to advocate for equity, diversity, inclusion, and engagement within the structural engineering community.

If you have suggestions for this list, please don’t hesitate to contact staff@seaoi.org, the EDI committee. We hope you take advantage of this unique opportunity to find the best talent and build a more diverse and inclusive workforce!

This is a partial list, and there are approximately 5 HBCUs with whom we are still actively working to establish contacts.

Some of the schools include:

  • Alabama A&M
  • Howard University
  • North Carolina A&T
  • Southern University and A&M College
  • Texas Southern University
To provide some context, the SEAOI's Equity Diversity Inclusion (EDI) Committee utilized the following methodology when creating the list:

HBCUs that award a Bachelor of Science (or MS) in Civil or Architectural Engineering. The list does not include HBCUs that partner with a nearby non-HBCU to award the BSCE degree

  • HBCU programs that offer Structural Engineering courses, including steel and concrete design.
  • The EDI Committee emailed and called all HBCUs with a Civil/Arch Engineering program to confirm and fact-check information shown on the list. If an HBCU did not make direct contact with the EDI Committee to confirm information, that HBCU was not included.

If there is an HBCU that you recommend including, please let us know. If you have a contact we can coordinate with, that would be greatly appreciated.
