Description
Chicago’s John G. Shedd Aquarium originally opened to the public in 1930, as part of the Century of Progress World’s Fair. Its mission was to give the City a world-class aquarium where people could come and learn about aquatic life from all over the world. The Shedd, as locals call it, has faithfully fulfilled its calling over the last nearly 100 years in operation. As it approaches its centennial, a massive renovation is underway to continue that mission with updated exhibits, or an “Experience Evolution.” The centerpiece of this renovation is the center rotunda exhibit, called “Wonder of Water.” This presentation will touch on the challenges involved in working with aquarium design, special detailing and design considerations, and working on historic buildings with modern loading criteria.
