An Overview of Mass Timber Connection Design Basics

SEAOI is proud to partner with SEAVA to present "An Overview of Mass Timber Connection Design Basics." Mass timber construction offers a unique combination of sustainability, adaptable design, and aesthetics that have given rise to dozens of elegant structures across the globe. With the recent code changes in the US, it is easier than ever for designers to use mass timber in bigger, taller buildings. These mass timber elements are capable of supporting large loads, and accordingly, the connections in these structures must be equally capable of safely transferring the structural demands.

Proper design and detailing of connections are imperative for the performance of any structure, and timber design is no different. This presentation will address some of the important elements for mass timber connection design, including structural design provisions, fire-resistant connection design, and details to consider when using pre-engineered solutions such as beam hangers. A discussion of the influence of connector placement on brittle failure in wood elements, seismic drift performance, and fire performance will be included.
