Bridging the Gap: Redefining Rebar performance with Textured Epoxy Coating
Textured Epoxy Coating (TEC) is an emerging advancement in corrosion-resistant reinforcing steel technology for concrete bridges, combining enhanced durability with superior steel-to-concrete bond performance. Defined in the recently published ASTM A1124 standard, TEC utilizes a dual-stage fusion-bonded epoxy process in which a textured outer layer is applied over a chemically active ASTM A775-compliant base coat, creating a monolithic, two-layer coating system. Unlike conventional epoxy-coated rebar (ECR), TEC restores surface roughness and bond characteristics comparable to uncoated steel while maintaining the corrosion protection benefits of epoxy.
Research conducted by the University of Kansas, the University of Illinois, Kansas University, and other institutions has demonstrated that TEC can reduce splice and development lengths, minimize surface cracking, improve damage tolerance, and enhance long-term structural performance. TEC also supports sustainability objectives through the incorporation of repurposed materials and compatibility with alternative cementitious systems. Laboratory and field evaluations, including ASTM A944 bond testing, durability assessments, and chloride permeability studies, indicate that TEC can extend service life, reduce maintenance requirements, and lower lifecycle costs for bridge infrastructure. With state transportation agencies already evaluating its use, TEC has the potential to significantly influence future bridge reinforcement standards by delivering improved durability, resilience, and structural efficiency. With agencies like IL-DOT already exploring adoption, TEC is positioned to reshape standard practices in bridge reinforcement design.

In this role, he oversees the market for both and powder and liquid coating technologies pertaining to subsegments that include oil & gas transmission, carbon capture, water pipelines, etc. Jigar has a Doctorate degree in Chemistry (Polymers & Coatings) from Missouri Univ. of Science & Technology-USA, and about 20 years of research and technology expertise in industrial coatings development and corrosion protection. Jigar is based out of Minneapolis and passionate about new technology, nature, sports, travel and corrosion protection.
