UPMC Presbyterian Hospital Kamin Bed Tower

The presentation will examine the complex design challenges encountered on the UPMC Presbyterian Hospital Kamin Bed Tower Expansion project. The session will explore how the project team responded to constraints related to the site, structure, program, and existing hospital operations, and how these factors shaped key design decisions.
While every project presents obstacles, this expansion pushed the team to address interrelated issues across nearly every aspect of the work—from foundation systems and structural grid alignment to building geometry, lateral framing, and integration with an active medical campus. By walking through these challenges and the strategies used to address them, the presentation will highlight practical lessons learned and insights that can inform future healthcare projects with similar complexity.

Senior Structural Project Engineer & Associate Vice President, HGA
Jeff Millmann is a structural engineer with over 30 years of experience designing structural systems and managing a variety of project types and scales. He collaborates with the project teams from planning through construction to integrate structural systems with the architectural design and building system components. His background includes structural steel, reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete, wood, and masonry. Familiar with state codes, regional variables and emerging technologies, Jeff focuses on designing cost-effective, structurally appropriate systems that provide long-term value for clients and users.
