Description
Dr. Ali Ashrafi and Dr. Kevin Mueller of Thornton Tomasetti will be presenting on “Fire protection of buildings: Current practice to performance-based design”. This presentation will first provide a background on the current state of fire protection of buildings, focusing on protection measures for the structural elements and common issues faced in the design. Then, it will discuss the shortcomings of the current prescriptive design and the advantages and opportunities presented by performance-based design. These advantages typically include more flexibility in design, better aesthetics, better economy, better resilience, and quantification of building response to fire. Several examples from projects such as the Shed in New York, Pittsburgh International Airport, and Seaport World Trade Center in Boston will be discussed to show when and how performance-based design could provide such benefits. The presentation will also discuss modeling egress and smoke in fire and how designs can be improved using a performance approach to this topic. This webinar offers one Learning Unit and HSW (Health, Safety, and Welfare) credit.
