Navigating the New 16th Edition AISC Steel Construction Manual—The Gold Standard in Steel Design

This session will discuss and highlight key changes and updates to the recently released AISC 16th edition Steel Construction Manual.  The new Manual, which was published in mid-2023, contains new design criteria along with new design tables and aids, which will be highlighted in this session, along with design examples.

Learning Objectives

  • To gain an understanding of updates and revisions to the new 16th edition AISC Steel Construction Manual.
  • To learn about new preferred material specification.
  • To learn how to use the updated Manual Part 10 design tables.

Updates in the 2022 AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings (AISC 360-22)

Published last year, the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings (ANSI/AISC 360-22) introduces key updates for the practice of steel design and construction. Substantiative technical changes and their impacts on the end users of the standard will be discussed.

  • Explain the committee process used to develop AISC standards.
  • Identify major changes included in AISC 360-22.
  • Describe how users can learn more details about the changes in AISC 360-22.

About the Speakers

Margaret A Matthew, PE
Director of Manuals - AISC
Margaret A Matthew, PE, is the Director of Manuals at the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), where she oversees the development of their manuals, including the AISC Steel Construction Manual and the AISC Design Guide series. She serves as the secretary of the AISC Committee on Manuals as well as the AISC Connection Prequalification Review Panel. She has also been the Editor of the AISC Engineering Journal since 2015. Before joining AISC in 2008, Ms. Matthew spent more than a decade as a consulting structural engineer. She received her B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1993 and her M.S. degree in Civil/Structural Engineering in 1995, both from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Nathaniel Gonner, SE
Director of Specifications - AISC
Presenter Biography:  Nathaniel Gonner, SE, is the director of specifications at the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), where he oversees the development of their standards, including the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings. He is the steel instructor for the SE Exam Refresher Course for SEAOI. Before joining AISC in 2017, he spent eight years as a consulting structural engineer working on a variety of building projects.
